Art project: Lego robot bypasses Kindle copy - Spiegel Online

despite copy protection, there are ways to copy purchased for the Kindle e-books. But hardly likely to simultaneously watch so pretty and banal as that of Peter Purgathofer. The professor at the TU Vienna has a DIY robot programmed so that this helps to transfer to the e-reader displayed copy-protected texts in a copyable text file on a computer. A Web Video documented the work of the “DIY Kindle Scanners”, of the was realized with the Lego-Mindstorms-technology.

function of Purgathofers robot is limited to press two buttons: in exchange the “Next Page” button on the Kindle and the spacebar of a notebook. The latter button ensures that the MacBook camera takes a photo of displayed on the Kindle page. With the help of an online text recognition program of the photographed book content is then converted to plain text.

inventor Purgathofer it went at of its construction more order elegance than about efficiency. “No reasonable person would use this way to copy e-books,” the professor commented on a video documenting the process. He had opted for the expensive way, because the development was fun and the design look nice. The equipment has “a pleasant rhythm.”

only a book

According to the video description looks Purgathofer his robot but also as an art project, “the ratio of book scanning, copyright and digital rights management reflected”. The whole thing should be understood more as a provocative thought experiment, not a guide or invitation. The tech side, “All Things D” wrote Purgathofer by e-mail, the “DIY Kindle scanner” is a private project. He had been tested scanned in an e-book, but this to anyone else.

Viennese professor is by far not the first inventor who has developed with Lego Technique a curious robot. Worldwide, there are numerous amateur inventor who exchange over the net and in video form. A selection of unusual ideas of Lego hobbyist has SPIEGEL ONLINE introduced several years ago.
