Paperwhite Kindle 2 in the Test - lesen.net

14.10.2013 – John Main – eReader

 Kindle Paperwhite 1

Improved lighting, faster processor, e-ink Carta and shelving, pageflip, smart lookup and more: The new Kindle Paperwhite has over the visually almost identical previous model a number of innovations on board. What they are good, clarifies our review.

look and feel

At first glance, to distinguish old and new Kindle Paperwhite barely. The housings are identical, only the differ Writings: The new model is the “kindle” logo on the front a bit thicker, and on the back is emblazoned with a glossy amazon kindle instead of a discreet logo

Both devices weigh 215 grams, 40 grams more noticeable than the Kobo aura. In addition, the Kindle Paperwhite is almost two inches longer than the Kobo device, which is overall a bit of grip and round in his hand. Visual comparison to other light-readers PocketBook up of Tolino Shine Touch Lux does not shy away from the Kindle Paperwhite, he stands out here, but not positive. The processing is expected to be fine.

Accessories

The new Kindle Paperwhite comes in the same chic black box as the previous model. In our case, the packaging was unfortunately paved with large area (Hermes) shipping labels that do not leave residue when removed. For package contents also includes a USB cable. A charger must be purchased separately if required as well as a shell. Anyway: In the accessories section, there are also nearly as large a selection as for the Amazon

for any readers.

Technology

new Kindle Paperwhite a 1 GHz CPU is (old model: 800 MB) and 256 MB RAM. But outstanding technical innovation is the E-Ink display (758x1024px) Carta of the brand new technology that has been installed for the first time and exclusively in the new Kindle Paperwhite. E Ink promises 50 percent higher contrast compared to Pearl generation. E-Ink is also integrated shelf for less ghosting – this technology is also in the new e-ink devices from other manufacturers, such as in Tolino Shine, the Sony Reader PRS-T3 and the Kobo aura (but not in the Pocketbook Touch lux). The integrated lighting according to Amazon has moved closer to the screen surface, so that the Illumierung to fail even as the Kindle Paperwhite 1

memory is 2 GB, which is sufficient given the lack of MP3 support. As with the previous model (and all Kindles have appeared since the 2007 original Kindle, which had a) lacks a microSD card slot for memory expansion and data transfer. The Kindle Paperwhite is the only light reader without such an interface.

software, reading, lighting

You can tell the firmware that Amazon has at least six years intensively with electronic readers, their surface and not least busy with their consumer base. Who turns on its Kindle for the first time, gets taught the most important functions in a quick run – such a tutorial would also be good to other readers face. In the text adaptations Amazon is on quality rather than quality: Between eight font sizes and “only” six plus fonts Publishers font can be selected, plus there are three lines and side edge distances. Other readers have even more choice (about Kobo allows adjustments in strength and sharpness of the script), but the essentials, Amazon has built for years. From reading some friends missing: Automatic hyphenation and customizable text alignment

.

reading on the Kindle 2 Paperwhite fun: Paging is quickly and almost without inversion (unless you choose to read options “diplay with each flip update ‘, but it should hardly be necessary). Particularly well liked the new pageflip function that the book can be browsed without leaving the current page – a real added value that will hopefully soon be adapted by other manufacturers. The Kindle Paperwhite supports a number of file formats, including azw, mobi, txt and pdf. What is known is missing, epub support. DRM-free epub files can be converted as with Calibre into a kindle-compatible format with Adobe DRM-protected files that is only with the help of illegal means.

The quality of the text display is good, but far from revolutionary. Unlit, the contrast in direct comparison to the Kindle Paperwhite 1 marginally better (lighter background), 50 percent can be but at least no visible speech. Is important since even the new lighting: The display is now much more evenly lit, a partial cloud formation as the first Kindle Paperwhite no longer occurs. Also, the blue tint is gone, instead the light is now easy to yellow. Here are the Kobo aura like it a little better, the Kindle 2 is Paperwhite but already at a very good level.

Writing, Working

If you highlight a word or passage pops up a context menu with a number of options. Besides the classic “notes” and “markers” (which are automatically synchronized with other Kindle devices, as well as the most recently read passage) can translate or look up in Wikipedia text. Especially the latter, newly added feature we really like: A teaser is displayed directly in the book window, other information when needed to load the Wikipedia page on the Web browser. From there it goes well but with a tap back into the book, a perfect integration

.Many

work documents are in pdf format. This liquid can be zoomed and scrolled adjustments as locked zoom, reflow or be cut on the edge (Sony Reader PRS-T1-3, Pocketbook Touch Lux) but absent. Anyone who reads mainly large format pdf files is with a 6 “E-ink reader to the wrong place anyway though, something more options but it should already be.

Buy

eBooks, Cloud Apps

Paperwhite Kindle 6 For Kindle Store must probably not waste words: it is simply a matter of the best-stocked, most technically advanced and nutzwertigsten German marketplace for books. In addition to the Kindle Deals of the week and daily deals with English language titles, there are always Amazon exclusive promotions, many indie authors are still exclusively available here. The number of customer reviews and intelligent algorithms facilitate the selection eBook, implementation of the Kindle store in the White Paper is appropriate in the best sense. Unique is the way to return books when not favor.

purchased eBooks can be read not only on the Kindle Paperwhite, but it is also easy to others with the same account linked Kindle devices and apps download – no ecosystem is extensive and sophisticated. Reading progress and notes and highlights are synchronized between devices. eBooks from third party sources come in many different ways in the device memory. Besides the classical transfer via USB cable eBooks can be downloaded via email in the cloud (5 GB disk space for external files). Then of course it needs to download an existing WLAN connection

Conclusion

Kindle Paperwhite 7 +

the core function “Read” to Amazon is expected to show any weakness: The text display is excellent, balanced lighting, full customization capabilities sufficient to operate the device even for people with little technical savvy absolutely intuitive. Additional functions of dictionary to Wikipedia are unspectacular, but intelligently integrated and fulfill their function perfectly when they are needed.

who regularly reads on more than one device, the Kindle networked world have his joy at the big hardware and app ecosystem and its clever networking currently no other manufacturer approach. The Kindle Store leaves nothing to be desired, …

… but are Amazon customers in the commercial literature that is protected to a very large extent with hard DRM, largely limited. The case of all other traders (except Apple) for use upcoming Adobe DRM for epub files is not supported, the “lock-in effect” at Kindle’s so particularly large.

The external appearance is moderate, compared to the Kobo aura or even for extremely compact Sony Reader PRS-T3 pretty frumpy Paperwhite the Kindle 2 does that. Not only externally covered the changes to the first Kindle Paperwhite rather modest – long overdue is a better PDF support, Amazon has the theme obviously not a priority at all

. =

kindle-2-white-paper award Kindle Each tester has to wonder what he concedes the epub DRM support for lack of a priority. We think ultimately it also binds to the competition to a Anbietr (namely Adobe), which one is delivered unconditionally with his books and customer data, as we have just seen again until the password loss. Only the ecosystem within which one can change the e-reading hardware is greater when choosing an epub reader. To this extent it is in the postulation of “open” Kindle alternatives in large part to the marketing competition and Amazon for many (understandable) reasons evil-minded parties, which we do not give much in our review.

from Amazon which has its flagship eBook reader gently but improved in the right places. While e-ink Carta can not hold all the great promises of the E-Ink Corporation step are e-ink Carta and in particular the uniform lighting a real asset. On the software side pageflip and Wikipedia integration a real enrichment of the vocal coach at least a good nice-to-have. We are very much looking forward to the announced Goodreads integration, which should be submitted with a firmware update.

If you can live with the extensive Kindle Store compulsion, for there is no better reader. As equivalent epub alternative, we can recommend the Kobo aura – is a lot of work with PDF files (and can be dispensed with an integrated lighting), the Sony Reader PRS-T3 at the moment would be our first choice. Anyone who has a Kindle Paperwhite one calls his own, for a new purchase is worth rather not, especially since the new firmware features, according to Amazon or for the previous model to be made available.
