 free time

Amazon has announced new features for its child protection function Kindle Free Time. At least on American Kindle Fire tablets for an early games and funny videos lock until the kids have spent enough time with “educational” content. A certain learning effect is likely to occur in such a way or so.

Most parents have a bad conscience when watching TV or Tablet “park” their children – but now and need mom or dad sometimes a few minutes of free time. We do not know whether this thought was the inspiration for the naming of Kindle Free Time, but an advertised for next weeks update brings Amazon’s tablet a step closer, at least in the United States to the electronic babysitter.

Sets limits: the new

Set limits: the new” Learn First “function

While the German version of Free Time is not much more than a child safety lock for content on the device, the U.S. Pendat is now considerably larger. With FreeTime Unlimited there is a flat rate for child-oriented books, apps and videos. Soon even the “Learn First” is now added. This can be set to specific content on the Kindle Fire devices are only accessible once the kids have spent enough time with “educationally valuable” things.

Technically this is the fact that Amazon has categorized them manually. The most popular children’s media on amazon.com as well as everything in Free Time Unlimited. Apps, books and movies that were not classified by Amazon as “educational”, remain blocked until the child has spent enough time with “educational” content. In addition, parents can restrict access according to media type. This may look like this, that the daughter can only watch video after it has spent at least half an hour by reading books. So ultimately, the electronic version of the old tactics “dessert if the plate is empty first.”

new Freetime version brings a few more improvements, such as a flexible scheduler, the distinction between work days and weekends and at night all children can discourage the use of the device. But “Learn First” is the feature that clearly in the foreground Amazon.

We expect unintended learning effects

yet the update is available nowhere else. In the U.S. it is to be delivered before Christmas. We assume that “Learn First” will initially not offered in other countries, because it is closely linked to Free Time Unlimited, and the time-consuming manual categorization fragrances be separately necessary for each country. However, we have asked ourselves how hard it can be, so to outwit an automatic chaperone. Finally, the dessert you could get, too, were fed by the unloved food secretly to the dog under the table. Here goes something like this perhaps?

turn over regularly, in any event also incidentally while playing with cars or dolls. If “Tom Sawyer” is one of the shared content, it also found some ideas on how to get a child to unpopular duties around. Since it is only a matter of time until it comes to negotiations among siblings: “If you now reads five minutes for me, you may afterwards ten minutes playing Angry Birds.” Besides, of course, raises the question of whether reading is really attractive, if parents make it the subpoena.

We type in any case that “Learn First” leads to a double learning effect. Only when the children learn how to handle electronic locks or overcomes, and then at the parents who learn that can not be delegate all educational tasks to electronic helpers.
