Amazon goes into the development of cell phone screens. The world’s largest online retailer announced on Monday to have Samsung Electronics Liquavista bought. How much Amazon puts on the table for the beginning of 2011, Samsung acquired by Dutch company, was not known.

Liquavista focuses on a technology called electrowetting. This helps inter alia, in that mobile phones are easy to read even in bright sunlight. This technique can be used in mobile devices such as e-readers, smart phones and navigation devices.

Amazon wants to grow in these areas: the e-readers and the Kindle Fire tablet have long become a competitor for Apple’s iPad. Amazon is reportedly working on the development of additional hardware. The Liquavista technology is likely to be of benefit.

The purchase of Liquavista is not the only innovation on Amazon. The Group launched on Monday its own digital currency, with which users can buy apps and games.
