electronic books, the local booksellers have a hard time with his dominating Amazon Kindle reader market. 2012 Germany accounted for 41 percent of sales to the U.S. internet merchants, Thalia came with just 14 percent in second place.

about to change: The bookseller from Germany, Austria and Switzerland have jointly developed the Tolino Shine. This reader is equipped with a low price of 129 francs.

It has as its competitor, the Kindle Paperwhite (129 euros), a built-in, switchable backlighting and a built-Store, which enables downloading books via wireless directly to the device. The bookseller involved, in Switzerland there are Thalia.ch and worldview, integrate each their own store. To change the store, is not provided. With the products purchased from Thalia device can not shop at the world and vice versa. When a third-party purchases of books, for example by Books.ch, can be transferred onto the device via computer and the software Adobe Digital Editions.

navigation via touch screen is not very fast, but acceptable, and the store (in our test of Thalia) to get within a reasonable time to his book – especially if you know what you want. Is for extensive browsing and remains unsurpassed real bookstore.

Tolino Shine is the software is not quite as mature as the Kindle. To date there is no built-in dictionary and no ability to highlight passages or to increase the line spacing. There is no Tolino model with cellular connectivity, which could be used by people without Internet access, and binding to a store by the users is a disadvantage.

Yet this reader the most convincing alternative to the Kindle and a good choice for those who like to buy their electronic books with a European supplier. (Tages-Anzeiger)
