Review: Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 - Web.de

HDX with its 8.9 inch screen size larger than the iPad Mini or the Nexus 7 and therefore not as well suited as an e-book reader. On the one hand it can not be kept as comfortable in one hand, on the other hand, it is with its 370 grams lighter than other tablets in its class. Because of its large screen and its long battery life makes it an ideal multimedia tablet, use player for videos and surfing via Wi-Fi.

Sleek design and good workmanship

7.85 millimeters thick, the HDX feels really grippy. The slightly upturned lateral edges of magnesium unibody facilitate access to micro-USB and headphone port. Volume control and on / off button are mounted on the back of the tablet.

The operating system running on the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 Fire OS version 3.0. Although the well-known under the code name Mojito Amazon OS is based on Android 4.2.2, but has a completely different designed user interface. In addition, the access to Google’s Play Store is missing. The arranged as a carousel tablet apps and content such as videos, you can quickly select and smooth turning.

menu like offers, apps, books, documents, shopping, photos, audiobooks, music, search, video, and Web are at the top of the screen. With a wipe from the top you can open the status bar. It shows you the setting menu and options screen and Wi-Fi. The direct access to certain apps such as email, camera or browser below possible via the menu bar. Except for the carousel is not much difference to Android.

Amazon Advertising dominates the tablet

impossible to overlook the tablet is focused on shopping through recommendations and commercials Amazon Video or daughter Lovefilm. The clips appear in the video menu even before “Personal Files”.

Parental controls Kindle FreeTime, you can specify 8.9 selected content to specific users on the Kindle Fire HDX. Amazon will support you through age recommendations for the respective contents. For Parental Control also exists a password protection.

apps in the Amazon App Store

the Kindle Fire can be personalized with the exception of APKs in principle only apps from the App Store Amazon install. In the store you will find a wide range of file managers, and Office apps like Documents to Go or Office Suite Pro. You can work productively with many apps: Adobe Photoshop via Evernote and Flipboard to LinkedIn, Shazam and SoundHound. The range of games, however, includes only a few games like Asphalt 8 or Fifa 14 However, many important apps are not available. Among other missing Bubble UPnP, Dropbox, Runtastic and Whats App. Local apps are hardly represented. While there are mediatheques applications for ARD and ZDF, but it lacks for example, DB Navigator, Telecom Program Manager and Xing. None even with Google Apps. The “Mayday” feature for the live video to support can currently use only in the USA.

Acceptable pace for games

Despite rapid responses to taps and gestures the zoom function responds more slowly. Otherwise, the quad-core Snapdragon CPU from Qualcomm 800 is impressively fast. The Kindle Fire cuts in benchmark tests for browser games and almost as well as from the two new iPads with the A7 processor, at the same time the device is just as quick as the fastest Android tablet Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1. Games with many effects such as asphalt 8 run smoothly.

multitasking of Fire OS only poorly implemented. When changing from one app, for example, launches a movie in the video player ever again. The dual-band module with a radio frequency of 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz and a transmission rate of 64 Mbit / s is sufficient for streaming Full HD video over WiFi from a rule.

Bright, high-resolution screen

2,560 x 1,600 pixels, the screen has a higher pixel density than the Nexus 7 or the retina Mini. To be noted that none of the pixels are visible to the naked models eye. The display shows a sharp text and fine color gradients in images and icons. The bright screen makes from every angle for good contrast and great colors.

HDMI and card reader are missing

features of the Kindle Fire HDX but leaves something to be desired, because an HDMI output or a slot for micro SD cards you are looking for here in vain. A GPS receiver is integrated only in the LTE model. Therefore, the position will be found via WLAN. The two built-in tablet cameras take good pictures and after the update on our test model also has good videos. Sharp photos with rich colors and low noise supplies the rear camera with integrated LED flash for shooting in low light conditions. With the front camera, you can record videos smoothly.

Test Result

The Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 10.1 can compete well with other Topgeräten like iPad Air and Galaxy Nexus. It provides good performance, excellent display and a good battery life. It costs 10 euros less than the cheapest Mini-retina model and 100 euros less than the iPad Air with comparable equipment. The battery life and screen quality is even better than Air iPad and iPad Mini, but the unit will not operate so smoothly. In addition, the HDX is cheaper than the Nexus 7 The biggest shortcoming is the relatively sparse app offer in the Amazon store.
